10 Sep Strategic Planning: Why Mission, Vision & Values Come First
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)
Many business leaders confuse budgeting or goal-setting with strategic planning. While important, those activities alone don’t provide the clarity and direction needed to navigate a rapidly changing marketplace. A true strategic plan is more than a spreadsheet—it’s a framework that defines where your organization is headed, how it will get there and why it matters eternally.
The C12 Five-Step Strategic Planning Process
Each year, C12 members revisit a proven framework to build and refine their strategic plans:
- Look Inward – Clarify your mission, vision and values.
- Look Back – Evaluate the effectiveness of last year’s plan.
- Look Up – Pray and align with God, boards, and key stakeholders.
- Look Around – Assess your current position through SWOT, PESTEL, and other tools.
- Look Ahead – Define your strategic vision, annual objectives, KPIs, and execution plans.
This process keeps planning from becoming a once-a-year exercise and turns it into a disciplined rhythm of intentional leadership.
Most strategic plans fail because leaders skip the “Look Inward” step. Mission, vision and values (MVVs) are the bedrock of effective strategic planning. Without them, even the sharpest strategies will drift, teams will lose alignment and decisions will default to short-term thinking. Defining clear MVVs is the cornerstone of building a business that truly wins at what matters most.
Why Mission, Vision & Values Come First
- Mission clarifies why your business exists. Beyond making money, what problem are you solving and who are you serving?
- Vision paints a picture of where you’re going in three to five years. It’s aspirational, inspiring and directional.
- Values define how you operate day by day—the non-negotiable behaviors that shape culture and decision-making.
When your MVVs are clear and consistently lived out, they serve as a compass in both opportunity and adversity. They help you resist compromise, unify your team and guide strategy in alignment with God’s calling.
A Call to Action
As Christian business leaders, we are called to build not just successful companies but Kingdom-class enterprises—organizations that steward resources wisely, impact lives and glorify God. Strategic planning begins with identity: who we are, where we’re going and how we will lead along the way.
This month, take time to revisit your MVVs. Share them with your team. Test their clarity. Ask how they influence your daily decisions. And most importantly, commit your work to the Lord, trusting that He will establish the path ahead.
